Virtualization Analyst

POSITION SUMMARY:
The main purpose of this position is to provide support for the virtualized computing environment(s) and serve as a resource to all users of the environment(s).  This position provides Level 1 technical support of all business and I.S. sponsored projects. 
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 
  • Perform basic level administration duties required to maintain the virtualized computing environment using tools included in the VMware solutions stack. (40%)     
  • Perform basic level tasks for all related infrastructure projects, including business continuity and disaster recovery. (30%)
  • Assist with enforcing and implementing policies and procedures related to virtualization. (10%)
  • Work closely with business and I.S. associates, and outside vendors to effectively execute virtualized computing environment additions and changes. (10%)
  • Provide 24x7 support of the virtualized computing environment  including after-hours maintenance and on-call duties. (5%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Basic level knowledge of virtualization concepts and administration, VMware product suite preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to continuously learn and improve technical knowledge.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call support rotation and provide non-standard work hour support.
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to complete projects consistently and handle multiple tasks in a timely manner with some assistance.Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to perform basic level monitoring and troubleshooting using known documented steps.
  • Good communication and professional skills.
  • Basic level proficiency with Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Basic level knowledge of IT Security concepts.
  • Basic level proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and Outlook.
  • Basic level knowledge of storage area networks and network attached storage environments (Hitachi and NetApp) preferred.
  • Ability to rack 50 pound servers as needed.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITES & REQUIREMENTS, VISUAL ACUITY, WORKING CONDITIONS AND NOISE LEVEL:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, talk, hear, lift objects from a lower to higher position or move objects horizontally and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • The physical requirements of this position are considered to be medium work (Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects).
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less in order to view a computer screen).
  • The noise level in the work environment is considered loud (data storage center, HVAC).
 
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • 1+ years professional and/or academic IT experience required.
  • 1+ years technical experience with current VMware virtualization configuration, administration, and troubleshooting preferred.
